Aletta composes for visual and immersive media as well as the concert hall. She combines her African heritage rhythms with western harmonies to create a unique voice for every score. She has a melody for every scenario whether it is for a movie scene, video game, virtual reality experience or the main title of your personalized trombone sonata. Aletta holds a BMUS in Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music with a focus on music for virtual reality and music for a cause – documentaries. As the audio team lead, Aletta guided the students through learning audio programming fundamentals and practical application on theDream Machine – created in collaboration with the Berklee EPD department in collaboration with Nona Hendryx, Chagall van den Berg, and Laurie Anderson.
As the VR project lead on ArrivalVR, her paper Using reverse interactive audio systems (RIAS) to direct attention in virtual reality narrative practices: A case study, was published by Springer, and she was asked to present her demo at the International Conference of Interactive Digital Storytelling, Bournemouth.

Terugkeer van ‘n Soldaat is a South African short film, depicting the horrors the Angolian war raged on the continet. Aletta was the sole composer on the project, collaborating with collegues from Berklee for the live recording and production of the music.

Aletta (Althea) Steynberg is a composer, performer, conductor, orchestrator and music technology specialist. Her passion is to help people tell their stories by bringing their experiences to life with the synergy of her talents as a musician and modern technologies. She has found her calling in creating music for immersive media installations and extended reality experiences that serve a cause. Her aim is to change the perception of entertainment – not as a tool to burn time or passively stare at a screen but to show the beauty of the world’s people through art; to connect communities across the globe through the power of music and storytelling.

“Conducting is a magical experience of bringing the notes to life”. Masterclasses with Jaap van Zweeden and Johannes Schlaefli, as a passive participant, and an apprentice to Pienaar Fourie, former conductor of the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, has given Aletta international experience with an ear for detail that is invaluable in the studio. Her experience with the East Rand Youth Orchestra taught her to communicate her thoughts clearly and succinctly while maintaining a positive collaborative environment.
